Spring Fair of Hungarian Flavours

If you love to stock up on some local craft produce this is the place to get them!

With the approach of Easter this time ham and other pork specialties will be in the limelight.

Besides meat, you can sample the best craft foods brought to you by Hungarian small farmers.

Some of the things to look for:

  • homemade pastas
  • spices, handcrafted mustard, chili sauces
  • pastries, chocolates and sweets
  • fruit distillate (pálinka) and wine

Concerts, children performances, show cooking, and tastings accompany the food fair on both days. Entry is free to all programs.

Tradition and Abstraction in the art of Dezső Korniss

National Gallery

The National Gallery, continuing its series of exhibitions presenting key figures in Hungarian fine art, now displays the paintings of modernist Dezső Korniss. The 110th anniversary of the artist’s birth calls for a display that examines his work from a new, unique perspective. The exhibition showcases his different painterly periods, along with his favourite themes and techniques, such as provincial art, folk art and rural craftsmanship. The display numbers almost 200 Korniss paintings, many of which were procured from private collections and are now being presented to the public for the first time.

Ludwig Museum

Budapest’s hub of contemporary art Ludwig Museum is celebrating its 30th birthday in 2019. The public collection of contemporary art collated by Peter and Irene Ludwig was a first for Hungary and the region which was then behind the Iron Curtain. In the past three decades, the Ludwig has hosted hundreds of exhibitions and thousands of cultural events, keeping the same focus along the way: bringing the Budapest audience closer to contemporary art and educating museumgoers in an exciting and innovative way.

The jubilee will see a celebratory exhibition and event series, dealing with the past, the present and the future of the museum. Visitors can expect film screenings, lectures, concerts and even a soon-to-be-published magazine for the occasion.

National Holiday in Hungary 15th March – Revolution Day

15 – 16. March

On 15th March Hungarians commemorate the Revolution and the following War of Independence against the Austrian-Hapsburg rule in 1848 – 1849. In 2019 we celebrate the 171st anniversary of the event. This day is one of the most prominent National Holidays in Hungary with commemorations, and family programs in Budapest and the rest of the country.

The official government celebrations start with raising Hungary’s National Flag on Kossuth Square at 09.00. At 14.00 Viktor Orbán prime minister will deliver a speech. Join the various family programs at various locations in Buda Castle, and the Várkert Bazaar. All festive programs are free.

Budapest Architecture film days

8-11. March

Toldi Cinema

Organised every year by the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Center, this motion-picture event presents and examines the correlation between the movie industry and architecture. Last year, Film Days highlighted one of Budapest’s key challenges, its housing crisis – the main theme and agenda of the 2019 festival are yet to be announced.

The renovated Church of Our Lady or better known as Matthias Church in Buda Castle has wonderful acoustics that can be enjoyed on concerts organized on a regular basis.

The Hungarian Virtuosi Orchestra usually gives 2 concerts each month (4 in the Christmas season).

These are not free but tickets are affordable and available in various price categories.

The VIP and Premium tickets are for comfortable benches placed near the the altar, right next to the band.

These tickets also include a welcome drink, a CD and a 3-course dinner in the Hilton’s Ikon restaurant next door.
